I still remember the first time I heard the term “banned books.” I was young and I was a voracious reader. I remember being completely confused by the whole idea of it. Why would someone ban books? I mean, if you didn’t want to read something then just, you know, put the book down.
Then I finally got it, that it wasn’t about someone not wanting to read a book themselves. It was about people who didn’t want other people to read something.
That confused me even more. I guess I was lucky. My mom wasn’t much of a reader (and still isn’t…she has copies of all of my books but she’s never read any of them) but she dutifully took me to the library once a month, where I would stock up on everything from Chaucer to P.L. Travers to Agatha Christie.
